Howdy!
If you're interested in woodcarving, this is the place
to be! Wow! What a great club! The friendly club members not only socialize (some people spend as much time, or maybe
more just visiting than carving), but they help each other with ideas and techniques. There are file cabinets full of patterns
as well as books and magazines. Formal and informal classes are taught by members as well as notable luminaries in every
imaginable field of interest.
What It's All
About
Individuals choose
what they want to carve, but the club also organizes activities that appeal to the whole club. For example, the club created
a replica of Noah's ark. Members volunteered to carve the animals and characters. Another project was the Cane Project.
Members carved eaglehead canes and presented them to disabled veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. At special times
of the year, some themes occur that are conducive to certain kinds of carvings. Someone usually rises to the occasion, and
before you know it, there's a class, complete with patterns, individual instruction, and basswood or tupelo blanks.
When and Where We Meet
Our club meets at the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in Wilmington,
NC, 9:00am to 11:00am on Thursdays, except on/near holidays. This church is the second oldest Methodist church in Wilmington.
It was in this small building that Charlie Jones Soong, founder of China's Soong dynasty, was baptized on November 7, 1880
by the Rev. Thomas Page Ricaud. We meet in the Fellowship Hall which provides plenty of well-lit workspace as well as tables
and chairs for carvers like the one pictured here.
